The Mysteries of Water I, an Investigation for Grades 4-6

ECHO programs amplify educational benefits, foster greater appreciation of local and national history and the natural environment, and assist communities in maximizing the social benefits of new technologies.Disciplinary Focus:
Physical Science and Environmental Science

Grade Level:
Grades 4-6

This module introduces students in grades 4-6 to physical properties of water in preparation for the later development of a deeper understanding of the reasons why the chemical and physical properties of water make life possible on earth, presented in a companion module for grades 7-9, Investigating the Mysteries of Water II, an Interdisciplinary Exploration, also developed by the New Bedford ECHO Project. The physical properties of water are discovered through simulations and laboratory investigations. Students learn how water is affected by heating and cooling. They discover how salinity and temperature change the density of water. The phenomenon of surface tension is explored. Students make connections between the physical properties of water and its various roles in sustaining life on Earth.
